5 Movies You Need to Binge Watch This Long Weekend

A long weekend’s coming up, folks – so stock up on popcorn and chill those drinks, make yourself comfy and staaaart a long weekend movie marathon!

Here are 5 movies that are worth watching back to back – they are timeless and enjoy cult status. You can watch all of them on SonyLIV – you get unlimited movies for only Rs 35 a month! Remember to order pizza in advance and try some face yoga between each instalment!

1. Erin Brockovich

I recently watched this movie for the 3rd time and if you haven’t seen it yet (oh why?!), then you must! It is a biographical film based on a true story of an American legal clerk and environmental activist Erin Brockovich who fought against energy corporation Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E).

Besides telling the story of an under-educated, jobless single mom of three fighting against a multi-billion dollar company, there is so much you can learn from this movie. It teaches you to be tenacious, to apologize sparingly, to embrace your personal style, to not be afraid to speak up and to stand up against the big guys. You don’t wanna miss on this one!

2. Piku

A warm and endearing screenplay ensures that anyone who lives with or has lived with ageing parents can identify with. It’s difficult sometimes to deal with their tantrums and we keep scolding them, but the moment we see the smallest deterioration in health, we are ready to do anything to ensure that they are back to their childish ways.

The film explores the relationship between an old father and his daughter on whom he completely depends and most of us can relate to it. Piku proves that you don’t always need the typical masala fare for a good movie.

3. The Help

The Help is adapted from Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel of the same name. An aspiring journalist & writer decides to write a book from the point of view of the maids – the helps – exposing the racism that they face working for white families. The film depicts a time in Black history that we may not want to remember, but should not forget.

It is one of those few movies that you can watch together with your family. It sparks discussion, teaches a history lesson, and makes everyone think about how we treat others. And yes, don't forget to grab a few tissues. There will be tears!

4. Gol Maal

If you’ve seen Gol Maal (not Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal, duh!), then you’ve been blessed with one the best classic comedies ever made in Bollywood! This moustache-centric movie will send you in a fit of uncontrollable laughter every time you watch it! If you wanna learn a trick or two about how to con your future dad-in-law, then watch this hilarious comic-caper...

5. PK

One of the biggest hits of 2014, PK is a must watch (if you haven’t already watched it. And if you have, it’s one of those movies you can watch again and again!) It’s expected from an Aamir Khan film – a story with multiple layers that deal with human emotions at their very best. We break laws, believe in unworthy and fraud Godmen, take each other’s lives in the name of religion and in this upside down world when a person like PK enters, there is a lot to explore.

And if you’re wondering what to watch and how & where you can watch these movies, register on SonyLIV and get subscription for movies starting from just Rs 35!
