Salt Lake City is a major IT hub and a centre of economic and social expansion in Kolkata. It is a satellite township developed between 1958 and 1965 to accommodate the growing population of Kolkata. The township was named Bidhannagar to commemorate the endeavor of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, in making the project a huge success. It was built on a reclaimed salt-water lake, and thus the name Salt Lake City became popular. The area houses more than 80 beauty parlours and spas. It is one of the most affluent localities in Kolkata.
